You’ll be amazed by the transformation of this family home from dated to delightful. A young family moved into this house, and realized it needed a major update to fit their contemporary tastes. With the second child on the way they were looking for a space that felt warm, easy to manage, and where the family could grow up together.

All along London and the UK you can find series of terraced houses just like this one. This home is a two-story building, with a small garden out the back. Owners Hugh and Holly are a young couple, who both work in the city, so Kilburn is a great area for an easy commute.

The home itself hadn’t been modernized or updated for two generations and was looking rather dated. One of the first things to go was the pebble-dash exterior; the facade has been stripped back down to the bare walls, restored, and painted. The entire house restoration project was overseen by Vorbild Architecture, who mentioned that the bricks in the front turned out to be quite badly damaged and had to be restored back to the right shape by hand, and painted over. The hard work has paid off, as it looks incredible!

Welcome to the reception room, the living room area at the front of the house. The space has been given a breath of fresh air, making it feel more well lit, opting for wooden shutters instead of the net curtains. The fireplace has been fitted with a wood burner, and underfoot the dark carpet has been replaced with a light, herringbone patterned wooden floor.

The walls feature a light gray color which helps keep the room from not getting too dark; pastels and quieter colors bring the room together, with an underlying blue that seams elements together throughout the house.

A wall dividing the ground floor reception rooms has been cut out to join the space together. During the work, it was discovered that many of the ceilings were actually being held up by the window frames themselves – so some of the external walls had to be taken down and rebuilt, which turned out to be a bit of a hidden cost during the project.

The back area has a playroom area for the children, with these gorgeous stools and cabinets. Although it’s a space for children, it is still an enjoyable space for adults, with mature shapes and colors in the design style. It will adapt easily as the children grow up.

The kitchen out the back was extended further into the garden. It has received a complete overhaul!

The kitchen has been extended through to the garden, to make a large open plan kitchen and dining room area. The doors open up to a completely redesigned garden, with decking and plants.

The owners initially got in touch with Vorbild Architecture after seeing positive results in a neighbor’s kitchen extension down the road. The area has height restrictions for things like the kitchen extension, so the room slopes down a bit lower than they had originally wanted. To solve the problem, they dug the height of the kitchen down a little bit. A small dining room and kitchen were demolished and absorbed into this new room; as the garden was pretty small already they didn’t want to build out too far into the back. Along with the skylights and large windows the room has more than enough height and space now.

Holly found the tiles for this kitchen and dining area. They are handmade and therefore quite delicate, but they definitely make the room – they’re gorgeous. In fact it was during the course of choosing the tiles and lamps that Holly realized that she really enjoyed matching the colors and styles, and has ended up switching her career over to work as an interior designer!

Simple, clean, warm and friendly; the master bedroom is a bright and cheerful space for Hugh and Holly to relax, as long as they don’t mind ghost stories!

The house has a long history, having previously been kept in the same family for two generations. There was a story that this room was haunted. During the Second World War, London was particularly affected by the Blitz and many bombs were dropped in the area. The story goes that one of the blasts from a street away caused part of the original cornice in the room underneath to fall down! It was never put up again as a reminder of that history.

Sharing the same floor as the master bedroom are the children’s bedrooms. Neutral colors and a Scandinavian aesthetic dominate the room, and it’s lovely to see the different patterns and designs that can be incorporated easily in the fabrics and textiles, built over the base colors of the walls and furniture.

The house was originally two-story, with the reception rooms downstairs and the bedrooms upstairs. But now the loft area, which was previously not easily accessible, has been given a new lease of life with stairs that reach up and access the guest bedroom.

The detail on these stairs is incredible. They were hand made and look lovely with the natural grain of the wood.

Hugh and Holly were both really pleased with the final outcome of the refurbishment. It was just in the nick of time, too, as shortly after they welcomed a baby boy into the world. But with their newly painted, freshly prepared home I’m sure they will be well-served in the future with this house. It’s a gorgeous space for now and totally adaptable for the growing family’s needs, and the next two generations!
