Old Italian farmhouses are not in short supply, but people who want to live in draughty buildings are. Luckily, many of these buildings are now being transformed into modern homes to appeal to a wider range of residents. At the top of this Lombardy farmhouse, for instance, sits a 1,500 square foot (140 square meter) apartment with a back-to-basics interior design style. The minimalist apartment sits under a mansard roof, with four steep sloping sides. The rest of the modern farmhouse is sober and sturdy against the backdrop of the ceiling’s striking shape.

Can you guess what a person is like by seeing their home interiors? This apartment was custom designed for a career woman with huge personality. Her preference for the design style was strong lines and a neutral space that would be adaptable over time. The home’s walls and stunning beams sport white, while pops of yellow and custom made furniture tell their own story.

According to renovators ZDA, the project’s most interesting design feature was the decision to keep the bedroom to living room flow flexible. They installed folding doors between the bedroom and living room to define the borders, or alternatively, open the space up.

“The result is flexible accommodation where the perception of space varies according to the needs of the client. The client feels that she is in a single large open-space where there is no distinction between the living area and the sleeping area [due to] the opening of the folding doors. By closing the doors, however, the owner is immediately immersed in a more intimate and collected space.”

The bright yellow bathroom walls offer an instant pick me up! The powder room proves that a sunny canary color can instantly perk up a space, just like in this Taiwanese basement house.

The master bathroom is central to the entire apartment, dividing the area between bedroom and living space. When the folding doors are opened, the huge side passages are like corridors.

The same neutral white and wood finish provides continuity through all the spaces. At the same time, the choice of deep oak contrasts wonderfully with the bright whites.

The home owner’s favourite part of her home is the bedroom, with the Tadao bed by Flou. Parentesi lighting, designed by Flos, flank the bed on either side.

Lastly, a conservatory room provides another social area for dining and enjoying the refreshing countryside views.

Clearly, the dramatic remodeling of the old building into a modern farmhouse apartment translates into sophistication with broad ranging appeal.
